Snowmobile clubs are the grass-roots level snowmobile organizations powered by local volunteers and snowmobile enthusiasts. These clubs are the workers, and the heart and soul of our snowmobiling community.
Beyond local clubs, snowmobilers can be further united through county, regional, state, national and even international snowmobile organizations. Bringing clubs together under these higher-level organizations gives snowmobiling a stronger voice and encourages networking and education.
Below is a brief description of each, with links to organizations.
Clubs
ISMA reports there are 3000 snowmobile clubs worldwide. Wisconsin has about 600 clubs, and Sawyer County has 7 snowmobile clubs. I recently published an article about our Sawyer County clubs that you can find here. You can find other Wisconsin clubs at the AWSC club listing page, otherwise, SnoGoer Magazine has a list of clubs in other states.
County or Regional Alliances
County or regional alliances unite area clubs, usually to streamline responsibilities for maintenance and grooming of trails in their areas. In our county, The Sawyer County Snowmobile & ATV Alliance is the umbrella organization over 10 clubs: snowmobile clubs, ATV clubs, and some dual clubs. Our Alliance owns the grooming equipment and is the contractor who maintains and grooms the trails for Sawyer County. Read more on this page.
Most of our counties have a snowmobile alliance, although I couldn’t find data on exactly how many there are in Wisconsin, or other states. If you are searching for a specific alliance, try an internet search, or call that county’s forestry department for information.
Statewide Snowmobile Organizations
The International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA) reports that there are 25 statewide snowmobile organizations in the US, while the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) lists 17 on their website.
Wisconsin’s statewide organization, the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC) has about 600 Wisconsin snowmobile clubs throughout its 72 counties. AWSC is the statewide voice for our snowmobilers. Each county has a director (I am the Director for Sawyer County), and a representative (Don Mrotek). Through AWSC, its club members can purchase discounted trail passes, plus enjoy other discounts and benefits.
AWSC is active in Wisconsin legislation regarding snowmobiling – through efforts from our knowledgeable Legislative Committee (I’m on this committee) headed up by Sam Landes (Dane Co), and our lobbyist, AWSC is a strong advocate for our state’s snowmobilers.
AWSC holds four Directors meetings a year: A Winter meeting, the Spring Convention, when we hold yearly elections, a Summer Meeting, and finally, the Fall Workshop- which offers many educational seminars for attendees. These meetings are held in different locations throughout the state- and usually the spring and fall meetings bring in well over 600 attendees.
National Snowmobile Organizations
The American Council of Snowmobile Clubs (ACSA) is the national organization of statewide snowmobile organizations. Similar in meaning to what the AWSC is to all the Wisconsin snowmobile clubs. Our previous AWSC President, Dave Newman, is the VP of ACSA, and he is quite active in legislation on the national level- one of the purposes of ACSA.
ACSA is committed to preserving the future of our sport and they are the snowmobiler’s voice on a national level. It is worthwhile to join and support ACSA- membership fees are only $15/individual or family, or $25 for a whole club! Help support this organization who works so hard to promote snowmobiling and keep our rights intact!
The United Snowmobile Alliance is another organization that advocates for snowmobiling on a national level. I don’t know much about this group- so you may want to explore their website for more information.
The International Snowmobile Congress
Each year during the second week of June, snowmobile representatives from organizations around the world meet to promote and celebrate snowmobiling, and these participants form the International Snowmobile Council.
Snowmobile groups from state, regional and national organizations, manufacturers, tourism and media leaders, law enforcement agencies, and many others, come to network, discuss, promote, and learn, while addressing issues faced by the industry.
In 2024, our own AWSC proudly hosted the 56th annual ISC in Green Bay! In 2025, the June 11-14 ISC event will be held at Prince Edward Island, an island province in Canada.
