2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Sawyer County Snowmobile & ATV Alliance!
The Sawyer County Snowmobile & ATV Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization that has been in operation since 1984. The Alliance’s goal is to develop and maintain one of the best snowmobile and ATV trail systems in northern Wisconsin. Educating riders, and promoting safe riding are important objectives as well.
The Alliance is made up of 10 snowmobile and ATV clubs who assign club members as delegates to the Alliance. Clubs take turns hosting monthly Alliance meetings throughout the county at business sponsor locations. Club delegates express their club’s ideas, work within Alliance committees, and run for elected Alliance positions. Check out the Calendar or News from The Alliance Secretary pages to find our next meeting,
Currently, our Alliance officers are President Dan Schauder, VP Jesse Reglin, Cathy LaReau is secretary (that’s me), and our treasurer is Lori DeJoode.
Our Alliance Board of Directors is made up of ten members- one from each club, to ensure each club has an equal voice when voting on Alliance matters.
January 18, 2025- the following three pages are in progress but only the Secretary’s Notes is up and running – stop back soon – The Club Corner will contain articles about clubs- what they are all about, their events, and more, and the Business Highlight page will feature different businesses in our greater Hayward, Wisconsin area.
The Alliance is the trail maintenance contractor for Sawyer County
The SCSA Alliance is a contractor for Sawyer County: The Alliance owns the grooming equipment, tractors, drags and other equipment, which is used by the clubs to groom and maintain trails. The trail aids contract is between the county and the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources. Contracts are determined annually- the total amount the county is awarded is based on a calculation of total miles of trails X maintenance amount per mile as determined by the state.
Club members groom and work on the trails- their hours and equipment used to perform this work is managed by the clubs and then reported to the county on a regular basis. The county pulls from the total contract amount awarded them by the state, to reimburse the Alliance for this work.
The Alliance uses this money to maintain and fuel grooming equipment, purchase new equipment, trail signs, and other approved expenses. The club members who do all the work are unpaid volunteers. Without them – we would not have a trail system! Please think of that every time you ride a snowmobile or ATV just about anywhere in Wisconsin…
Our Wisconsin Trails are Self-Funded!
The money for these state-to-county trail contracts comes entirely from snowmobile and ATV registrations, trail passes, and a portion of the gas tax paid for off-highway gas. Our trail system is entirely self-funded – there is no taxpayer money involved at all!
The Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources website has a lot of information about trail aids, grants, and rehab work for snowmobile and ATV trails.
Please consider donating to the Sawyer County Snowmobile & ATV Alliance
The Alliance is always looking for financial support for our trail and route projects– state funding is getting tighter every year, and ATV road route projects, especially, are not covered for reimbursement through our state ATV program- which forces the Alliance and its clubs to constantly fundraise to complete these important projects.
HELP us sustain the trails, routes and the motorsports we love!
Contact the Alliance if you’d like to donate! We are a 501(c)(3) organization-your donation is tax refundable. If you want to help specifically with our ATV route projects- be sure to include a note with your donation or write on the memo line ‘for ATV route use’ or get ahold of me and I’ll make sure your donation is credited to our ATV route fund.
We appreciate all who help us – every dollar makes a big difference!

The Alliance also has an active SCSAA Alliance Facebook page – please find it and like/follow for the latest news, updates, and trail reports. We first post news and critical updates to the public through our Alliance FB page. FB is great for instant communication, but it is difficult to find specific info later, unless you enjoy scrolling endlessly through Facebook…
If I feel the news reported through our Alliance FB page is important to keep, or elaborate on, I will usually add it to The Driving Force- and publish it as an article in our library, or make a new page about it, so the information is easy for riders to find later.
The Driving Force is not intended to be in ‘competition’ with our Alliance website or FB page- but rather, it complements our Alliance’s goal of educating riders. As an active writer and promoter of snowmobiling and ATVing, this site also serves as a place where I can store my own motorsports and educational articles.
