Over the past week, I’ve taken several calls from riders asking when our Sawyer County ATV trails close, so I thought I’d share what I know with our ATV community:
CLOSED NOW:
County Road C: from State Hwy 27/70 to Jos Chafer Road, for bridge repair- ATV detour is marked.
Trail 777: both wooded segments of this trail in LCO are temporarily closed – from Green Lake Road to Indian Lake Road, and from Indian Lake Road to Gurno Lake Road. Riders- use the bypass route from Green Lake Road and south on County Rd NN to either Gurno Lake Road or Chief Lake Road, depending on your destination.
CLOSING SOON:
Sunday, October 20: Trail 31 north of the Tuscobia Trail (Birchwood area) closes to ATV/UTV use until Memorial weekend 2025.
Wednesday, October 23: Trail 203/21 north of Moose Lake and up to Bayfield County, closes to ATV/UTV use until May 1, 2025 (this includes the short road route on State Hwy 77 from County Road S to Scheers Road)
Friday, November 15: Tuscobia State Trail (Trail 10) from Birchwood to the Price County line closes for hunting season. This trail re-opens for year-round use after December 15th.
Friday, November 15: All Flambeau River State Forest ATV/UTV trails close until May 15, 2025
WINTER RIDING:
Once snow grooming begins on the county trails, only ATVs 900 lbs. or less are allowed on groomed snowmobile trails – generally, UTVs are not permitted on snow-groomed trails. We will post more information closer to the snowmobile season.
ATVs and UTVs are allowed on the Tuscobia Trail (Trail 10) and 9-mile Loop (Trail 11) during winter after the hunting season closure is over.
SPRING THAW:
Our forest entities close their trails and related forest roads for spring thaw each year. Actual closure dates vary depending on conditions, but trails typically close between mid to late March and May. Watch for announcements closer to March. As mentioned above, Flambeau Forest trails close to ATV/UTV use from November 15 until May 15 each year.
ROAD ROUTES:
Paved road routes, and most gravel town road routes (not gravel roads that are part of a forest road system) currently open to ATV use, remain open year-round for both ATV and UTV use – other than the short route segment on State Highway 77 mentioned above.
