This document lists the general steps it takes to open a local road, county road, or portion of a state highway, for ATV/UTV use in Wisconsin. Print it, use it, share with others as you wish.
Important note about ATV/UTV routes on Wisconsin state highways and/or county roads– municipalities may be able to open a portion of a state highway, and/or a county road, within their municipality boundaries, if the speed limit is 35 mph or under, or if that portion of the state/county highway is over a bridge that connects an existing trail or route together. Normally, the town/city/village this portion of state highway goes through would need to first approve the route before going to WISDOT, but please explore more through The Driving Force, WISDOT, or through your local highway department.
